EGL 350: Poe at Stony Brook University (May 29 to July 6)

If you haven't yet taken a look, I am developing a Tumblr to go with EGL 350, Major Writers in American Literature before 1900.  This class is a continuation of the Edgar Allan Poe class I taught two years ago, and I am modifying it for Summer Session 1 (May 29 to July 6) at Stony Brook University.  The course page includes ads posted around the Stony Brook campus and advertised at Twitter and other web sites.

This version of the class continues to look at Poe's influence on literature and popular culture in his own time and up through today, so expect to not only read his major and minor works but also see adaptations in a variety of sources, whether in the literature of Vladimir Nabokov, the theories of Sigmund Freud and Edward Said, the films of Roger Corman and Vincent Price, the cartoons of The Simpsons and comic book artists, and even the music of Lou Reed and Lady Gaga.  The course page then is intended to be a community for students or even people outside of the classroom to contribute their own postings--if you see something that deals with Poe, feel free to submit your material as a post.

At the Tumblr page you also can find the course syllabus with the textbook list.  The schedule still will go through a few more revisions before classes begin, but I encourage any interested students to suggest revisions, as well as any works by Poe or related artists to include in the schedule.

If you are interested in the class, search online for "Stony Brook University SOLAR" to register.
